Before the Dawn

Before the dawn
comes deepest night,
when hope is dim
and seems forgotten;
but patience and faith
will see the veil
burned away
where earth touches sky.
A spark rekindles
the flame of day
and quickly fades
the gloom and grey,
giving way to a future
awash with light and color.
And the spirit rises
on the horizon,
eastward facing
what may yet be,
a soul shedding
the shroud of night
and looking to the dawn.
